FROM PHOENIXFROM LAS VEGAS

Each summer the DETOURS of Arizona team hosts our Arizona concierge friends on a trip to a surprise location in the Southwest. This year’s tour took us to the magnificent Canyon de Chelly. Along the way we visited Hubbell Trading Post, the Navajo Nation and Route 66 in Williams, AZ where we stood on the corner.

Departing early in the morning from the Phoenix/Scottsdale area, the 2016 Arizona Concierge Tour winded through Tonto National Forest to Payson, AZ for a quick breakfast stop. We continued on through Holbrook before entering the Navajo Nation where tour guide Donovan Hanley, native of the Bita’hochee, shared his personal experience of the Navajo culture at Hubbell Trading Post. Guests viewed Native American art, learned about the history of the oldest operating trading post, and watched a Navajo Master Weaver at work. After a picnic lunch, we were back on the road in our custom DETOURS vehicles on the way to Canyon de Chelly National Monument. We arrived in Chinle, AZ and quickly checked into to the Thunderbird Lodge before the DETOURS guides led an afternoon hike into Canyon de Chelly, one of the largest inhabited landscapes of indigenous tribes in North America. From the White Ruins to the petroglyphs on sandstone, this hike was truly unforgettable. At the bottom of the Canyon, we hopped on off-road jeeps to further explore the incredible National Monument.

The next day, we woke up early to tour several overlooks at Canyon de Chelly including White House Overlook. Before long we were off to Window Rock, AZ to experience the capitol of the Navajo Nation and view the incredible ‘window’ formation in the sandstone after which the city is named. We then traveled southwest near the Petrified Forest turning onto Route 66 in Winslow, AZ where we quite literally stood on the corner. A big thanks to La Posada for hosting us for lunch before we headed back to the Phoenix area.
